Public Works Intern Training Week

Does your municipality hire summer interns to support DPW work? Let us assist with their training!

June 1-5, 2026 | UNH Durham Campus

We're hosting a five‑day Public Works Intern Training from June 1 to June 5 at the UNH Durham Campus, designed to introduce interns to the fundamentals of working safely and effectively in municipal public works roles.

This structured program blends classroom instruction, field-based learning, and real‑world examples with industry experts to build foundational knowledge in public works operations, safety, infrastructure, and professional responsibilities.

What to Expect

Over the course of the week, participants will be introduced to:

  • How public works departments serve their communities
  • Professional communication and ethics in municipal service
  • Working safely outdoors, including ROW and work zone safety fundamentals
  • Basic plan reading and field application
  • Asset inventory, GIS, and infrastructure data
  • Stormwater and water/sewer system basics

Review the full training agenda and outline.

Although this training is not eligible for NH Roads Scholar credit hours, interns who successfully complete the full one-week program will receive a digital micro-credential certificate recognizing their achievement. This credential can be displayed on professional social media profiles such as LinkedIn, included on resumes and job applications, and used to support their future career outreach efforts.

Participant Eligibility

Our Public Works Summer Intern Training Program is intended to support municipalities by helping prepare interns who have already been hired or selected to work within a local public works, highway, utilities, engineering, or transportation-related department. The program complements on-the-job experience by providing foundational exposure to municipal operations, field practices, safety, infrastructure systems, and public works career pathways. Because the training is designed around real-world municipal work experiences and workplace application, participating interns should be current employees, seasonal hires, or formally selected interns sponsored by a municipality or agency at the time they attend the program.
